Texas A&M MREB (Medical Research Engineering Building)

With the ever-changing needs of support for biomedical research and physiology-based research, the MREB II project consisted of an expansion above the two existing floors of the current Texas A&M Health Science Center Medical Research and Education Building. The completed project, including infill of an existing shell space, totaled 171,981 GSF, and Pacheco Koch acted as the civil engineer for the project and was responsible for site design elements, site utilities and site grading. Creating a true space to allow different disciplines to come together to learn from each other and push medical research forward was not without its challenges. Ensuring  the floodplain of the existing creek did not impact new site design and construction, salvaging a portion of the existing fire lane to help bring the project back into budget, and ensuring emergency access to existing buildings was not compromised during construction through a new temporary access road on the other side of the creek were worth tackling. So was coordinating with new rainwater harvesting cistern designs, working with the City of Bryan on existing public utilities within the project site, and designing new duct banks and thermal lines to serve the continuing growth of the campus.
